Sacred Space Yoga is a boutique yoga studio in Hawthorn East on the city side of Camberwell Junction catering for a small number of students to find some quiet time, honouring themselves while they learn how to relax and cultivate their own sacred space within - a feeling of inner peace and tranquility that can gradually be taken into the outer world. The yoga incorporates a sequence of postures that follows an ancient tantric tradition with asanas (poses), pranayama (yogic breathing techniques) and dhyana (meditation) throughout. The aim of the yoga is to nurture the Prana or Chi, enhance its flow and massage the internal organs of the body - improving overall health and well-being, much like acupuncture does in Chinese Medicine. Prana or Chi flows throughout the body’s energy pathways, or meridians. The body is unwell when the flow of Prana or Chi becomes stagnant or blocked, whereas a free flowing and balanced Prana or Chi energizes the organs, systems and cells.

Additionally, the postures or asanas work on the body to increase strength and flexibility as well as reduce stress, tension and anxiety. Yoga is, however, a science not a sport or a game. Yoga by its nature never teaches competition. Competition means that one is always comparing and contrasting to external measures. Yoga instills integration, enrichment and incomparable inner strength. With these qualities, yogis master life. Mastery gives fulfillment and fulfillment stops one from dependence on the external. 
To increase the connection with the internal, with oneself and our own internal sacred space, much of our yoga is practiced with the eyes closed (pratyahra). Beginners will gradually be able to adopt this practice and begin to enjoy their connection within, reducing the impact of the western impatient mind that can block many of us from being able to be present and relaxed. The by product of this is learning to meditate without trying. Amanda Hopkins, RYT, is first and foremost a student of yoga. A former architect with a hectic life - four children and her own architectural practice. yoga showed her another way to be. She now enjoys spending her time in a less busy and non-striving way...moving from stressed out toward blissed out. She is passionate about yoga and how it aids health and well-being and dramatically increases the mind body connection/balance and subtly changes consciousness/awareness. Her passion for yoga (and all the ancient healing arts) has had a significant effect on the lives of those around her. This is particularly evident in the lives of her children who have been inspired to pursue careers and study in areas such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Qigong, Tai Chi, Ayurveda and Reiki. Amanda's yoga training was in a traditional school in India and she has also completed studies in Ayurveda, Pranayama, Yogic Philosophy as well as Ayurvedic walking massage and Reiki healing.
